NEWS: Three Prominent Orange County Leaders Endorse Stephanie Murphy for Re-Election

ORLANDO – Three prominent leaders in Orange County today endorsed Stephanie Murphy for re-election, citing her pragmatic approach to governing and her history of delivering for Orange County residents. Orange County May0r Jerry Demings, Orange County Sheriff John Mina, and Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer are all urging Orange County voters to return Stephanie Murphy to Congress to keep fighting for them.

“Stephanie Murphy is a champion for Orange County families, and I proudly endorse her re-election campaign,” said Mayor Demings. “From housing and homelessness to strengthening schools and infrastructure to promoting equality and opportunity, Stephanie has delivered time and again for Orange County. As sheriff and now mayor, I have always been able to count on Stephanie, and I urge people to send her back to Congress to fight for us.”

“As someone who has spent decades in law enforcement, I’m glad to have Stephanie Murphy in Congress helping us keep our communities safe,” said Sheriff Mina. “She is a powerful and effective leader in the movement to end gun violence, and she has helped secure significant  anti-terrorism funding. I’m grateful to have a leader like Stephanie in Congress, and I’m proud to support her re-election.”

“Despite all the chaos in Washington, Stephanie’s pragmatic approach to governing has been key to her long list of bipartisan accomplishments,” said Mayor Dyer. “I’ve known Stephanie for many years. She  listens, she cares, and she brings people together; that’s the secret to her success. Whether we’re recovering from storms or addressing critical issues like housing, climate change, gun violence, and income inequality, Stephanie never hesitates to roll up her sleeves and deliver for Orlando. I whole-heartedly endorse her re-election.”

“I’m incredibly honored to receive the support of these three great leaders in Orange County,” said Murphy. “Mayors Demings and Dyer, along with Sheriff Mina, have been terrific allies as we work together to improve the lives of all Orange County residents. I look forward to continuing to work with them as we make central Florida an even better place to visit, work, and raise a family.”

ORLANDO – Stephanie Murphy has raised over $1.4 million this election cycle for her re-election campaign, bringing in over $385,000 in the final quarter of 2019. Murphy begins 2020 in a strong financial position, with over $1.1 million cash on hand – nearly triple the cash on hand of her six Republican opponents combined.

Statement from Chip Harris, finance director for Stephanie Murphy for Congress:

“Stephanie Murphy’s commanding fundraising lead demonstrates her strength headed into November and that her focus on jobs, security, and opportunity is clearly resonating.

“While the Republicans in this race are in a mad dash to prove who will be the stronger rubber stamp for President Trump’s divisive agenda, Stephanie is working with both parties to rack up bipartisan victories, such as securing critical funding for gun violence research, passing sweeping reforms to lower prescription drug prices, and helping to pass the United States-Mexico-Canada free trade agreement.

“Washington may be distracted, but Stephanie Murphy is laser focused on putting people over politics and getting things done for central Florida.”

NEWS: Murphy Announces Three Key Endorsements for Re-Election

National Women’s Rights, Campaign Finance Reform, and Gun Violence Prevention Organizations Commend Murphy’s Leadership on Key Issues

ORLANDO – Planned Parenthood Action Fund, End Citizens United, and Brady have endorsed U.S. Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy for re-election, citing her voting record and leadership on three key issues important to central Florida. The Planned Parenthood Action Fund follows endorsements by EMILY’s List and NARAL Pro-Choice America meaning that Murphy has secured the full backing of most progressive national women’s organizations.

“I’m incredibly proud our campaign for jobs, security, and opportunity has been endorsed by EMILY’s List, NARAL Pro-Choice America, and now Planned Parenthood Action Fund,” said Murphy. “I have and will continue to stand with these powerhouse progressive organizations in protecting Roe v. Wade, defending women’s rights to make their own health care decisions free from government intrusion, and strengthening access to health care services for women and girls.”

In its endorsement letter, Planned Parenthood Action Fund commends Murphy’s voting record stating, “you have demonstrated strong support for sexual and reproductive health and rights, and we feel confident you will be a dedicated advocate for Planned Parenthood health centers and the people they serve when you are elected to the House in 2020.”

Murphy also secured the endorsement of End Citizens United, a national grassroots organization focused on electing campaign finance reform champions. Murphy said, “I’m incredibly proud to work with End Citizens United to overturn the disastrous Citizen United decision and get dark, special interest money out of our politics. In Congress, I’ve helped introduce and pass major reform measures, most notably H.R. 1 – a sweeping anti-corruption and campaign finance reform bill that strengthens democracy and returns political power to the people.”

“For the past decade, our democracy has been undermined by Citizens United,” said End Citizens United President Tiffany Muller. “We need to change how Washington works and that starts with electing leaders who represent the interests of the American people. These candidates are committed to fighting against the disastrous Citizens United decision and passing critical anti-corruption legislation to remove the stranglehold of special interests over government. End Citizens United is proud to endorse these candidates a decade after Citizens United, and we look forward to helping them win to restore our democracy.”

Finally, Murphy also announced the endorsement of Brady, a national grassroots organization uniting Americans against gun violence, who commended her dedication and leadership on the issue. Murphy, who decided to run for Congress in 2016 in the aftermath of the Pulse shooting, has become a national leader in the gun violence prevention movement, successfully repealing the Dickey Amendment last Congress and working to help secure $25 million for gun violence research just this year.

“Since coming to Congress, I’ve fought to build support for commonsense gun safety measures, standing up to the NRA and putting families first,” said Murphy. “I’m proud to earn this endorsement from Brady, a strong ally in our efforts to push for meaningful solutions to make our communities safer.” “We appreciate your dedication to the movement and look forward to working with you to unite gun owners and non-gun owners alike to take action, not sides, to end America’s gun violence epidemic,” said Brady in its endorsement letter.

NEWS: NARAL Endorses Murphy for Re-Election

Seven Pro-Choice Champions Across the Country Earn Endorsement from the Nation’s Leading Pro-Choice Advocacy Group

NARAL Pro-Choice America today announced endorsements of pro-choice champions for the 2020 cycle. These fighters for reproductive freedom have stood up to attacks on women and families from the Trump administration and the GOP and are key to ensuring the pro-choice majority in the House of Representatives can continue fighting for our rights. After working to elect pro-choice candidates up and down the ballot in 2018, NARAL is doubling down to support candidates willing to stand up for the right to choose and women and families across the country.

The fight for reproductive freedom runs through the ballot box, and that’s why we’re doubling down on electing pro-choice allies to office and announcing our newest slate of endorsed pro-choice champions for 2020,” said Ilyse Hogue, President of NARAL Pro-Choice America. “This bold group of advocates for women and families comes from districts across the country—from the suburbs of Tucson to the Hudson Valley to the Florida coast. In 2018, we worked hard to elect pro-choice champions up and down the ballot, and we’re ready to build on our momentum in 2020 to send these fighters for reproductive freedom back to Congress.

This newest round of endorsements include:

  • Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick (AZ-02) is a proven fighter for reproductive freedom who holds a consistently competitive seat surrounding Tucson by being a strong ally for Arizona women and families.

  • Rep. Stephanie Murphy (FL-07) is a dedicated public servant with a strong record of standing up for reproductive freedom for women and families in the Orlando area.

  • Rep. Charlie Crist (FL-13) made history in 2016 when he won a St. Petersburg-based seat Republicans have held for more than 40 years by ousting an anti-choice incumbent and running as a strong advocate for reproductive freedom, since demonstrating a solid record supporting abortion rights over his tenure in Congress.

  • Rep. Dean Phillips (MN-03) ran as a fighter for Minnesota women and families in 2018 and flipped a suburban Minneapolis House seat, replacing his anti-choice predecessor with a pro-choice champion.

  • Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18) has always been a champion for reproductive freedom who has stood up for the women and families of the Hudson Valley time and time again throughout his career.

  • Rep. Peter Defazio (OR-04) is a longtime champion for Oregon women and families and has proudly fought for reproductive freedom over the course of his tenure.

  • Rep. Jennifer Wexton (VA-10) won her race decisively by nearly 13 points in one of the biggest swings of the 2018 cycle by standing up for reproductive freedom and the women and families of northern Virginia.

NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates and chapters are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all. For more than 50 years, NARAL has worked to guarantee that every woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. Since 1969, NARAL has made history, grown to over 2 million members, and met the moments that have defined this fight with action, power and freedom.  In recognition of its work defending our constitutional right to choose, Fortune Magazine described NARAL as “one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America.”

Murphy Announces Re-Election Campaign for Congress

Pledges to Keep Fighting for Jobs, Security, and Opportunity for All Americans

WINTER PARK, FLA. — In a video released on social media to her supporters, Stephanie Murphy today announced she is running for re-election to continue representing Florida’s Seventh Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. Murphy, a Democrat first elected in 2016 who is consistently rated as one of the most independent and effective Members of Congress, said she wants to continue to fighting for jobs, security, and opportunity for all Americans.

“Already in this Democratic Congress, we’ve passed historic gun safety legislation and voted to get dark money out of politics. But, we must do more, and I want to keep fighting for you and central Florida. That’s why I’m proud to announce I am running for re-election so that together we can keep moving this country forward,” said Murphy in her announcement video. “I’m running for three reasons: jobs, security, and opportunity. We need more and higher-paying jobs with good benefits. We need to secure this nation and make our communities safer, especially from gun violence. And, we need to ensure every child has an equal opportunity to succeed in the greatest nation on earth. I want my kids and your kids to reach for the stars and achieve their dreams.”

Murphy, who earlier this year secured a seat on the influential Ways & Means Committee that has sweeping legislative jurisdiction on fiscal policy, trade, and Social Security and Medicare, is seeking her third term in the U.S. House, after defeating U.S. Rep. John Mica in 2016 by 3 percentage points and State Rep. Mike Miller in 2018 by 15 percentage points. Murphy also successfully defeated a primary challenger in 2018 by 72 percentage points.

Stephanie Murphy Re-Elected to the U.S. House

MAITLAND, FLA. — Voters in Florida’s Seventh Congressional District today re-elected Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy to the U.S. House of Representatives. Murphy, who was first elected to Congress in 2016 and is the first Vietnamese American woman to serve in Congress, said she was humbled by the victory and pledged to continue putting Florida families first.

Statement by U.S. Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy:

“I am so humbled to earn your trust for another term as your voice in our nation’s capital. Our campaign was focused on jobs, security, and equality, and on always putting people over politics. In a time when partisan politics has grinded government to a halt and when civility has lost its place in our politics, voters tonight in central Florida chose consensus over conflict and results over rhetoric. For that, I am forever grateful.

“My constituents know we may not always agree on every issue and we may not belong to the same political party, but I will always listen to the people I represent because that’s my job. The oath I took – and the oath I’ll take again in January – is to pledge my allegiance not to any political party or any president, but to the Constitution of the United States. In my second term, I will keep holding true to that promise: to do what’s right, no matter the political cost, and to always put Florida families first.

“I thank Representative Mike Miller for his years of service in our state legislature, and I wish Nora and him all my best in the next chapter of their lives.

“I am so grateful to my family and friends for their steadfast support over the last two years; I would not be where I am today without their love and faith and in me. And, of course, I am eternally grateful for the countless number of staff and volunteers across central Florida who believed in our vision for a stronger, more inclusive, and more prosperous America for all who call this great country home. Their faith in me will motivate me to work hard every day to make this community proud.”

MEMO: Stephanie Murphy Heads Into Election Night in Strong Position

RE: Stephanie Murphy Heads Into Election Night in Strong Position

Stephanie Murphy proved she is a tough campaigner when she upset John Mica in 2016, flipping Florida’s 7th district from red-to-blue and unseating a 24-year incumbent. Following that election – a rare bright spot for Democrats on Election Night 2016 – Murphy never took her foot off the gas pedal, serving her community tirelessly in Congress and running a formidable campaign. The strength of Murphy’s bipartisan track record in Congress, which she has communicated to voters across the district, gives her the momentum heading into Election Day.

Early vote numbers in Florida’s 7th Congressional District are encouraging, with Murphy’s field team continuing to hit thousands more doors on Election Day up until polls close at 7:00pm. Murphy’s strong presence in a bellwether district is poised to help Democrats up- and down- the ballot in a pivotal area of the state.

EARLY VOTE TOTALS SHOW DEMOCRATIC ENTHUSIASM IN FL-07

Democrats hold a narrow advantage in early voting statewide, with Murphy’s district notably delivering a larger margin over Republicans than in 2016. Over 5,900 more registered Democrats have voted early or by mail heading into Election Day than Republicans, a larger advantage than Democrats held at this point in 2016 (4,800), despite this being a midterm election cycle. Democrats were down by over 10,000 votes in FL-07 heading into the last midterm Election Day, 2014.

Stephanie Murphy’s Record of Accomplishment = Winning General Election Message
In 2016, voters were introduced to Stephanie Murphy and her powerful story: a refugee, an immigrant, a former businesswoman and educator, and a former national security specialist at the U.S. Department of Defense. They responded to her message of change, commitment to service, and genuine promise to reject hyper-partisanship and Washington gridlock.

In 2018, voters know that Stephanie Murphy has lived into that promise. In just two short years in Congress, she’s been all over her district, and racked up an impressive list of accomplishments. At a time when voters are fed up with a gridlocked, Republican-led Congress, outside groups have named Stephanie Murphy the most effective House freshman and the seventh most bipartisan in the entire U.S. House.

She led the effort to repeal the Dickey Amendment – ending the 24-year ban on the CDC being able to research gun violence. She brought home more than $100 million in emergency funding for Florida schools and universities when they took in Puerto Rican students after Hurricane Maria. And, she passed a law that strengthened the transition program for veterans when they re-enter civilian life. Murphy has also prioritized serving her constituents through casework, recouping over $1.6 million in earned benefits for thousands of seniors and veterans.

Murphy Ran Aggressive Campaign to Bring This Message to Voters

Stephanie Murphy has proven beyond a doubt that a Democrat can serve this district well. Yet Murphy has never taken her eye off the need to reach out directly to voters to ask them to allow her to continue serving them in Congress.

Murphy has raised significant resources to communicate her strong message at the doors, in the mail, online, and on television, bringing in over $3.2 million from a broad base of supporters to run an aggressive campaign, the likes of which has not been seen in central Florida. Her operation has prioritized meeting voters where they are, for example by hitting tens of thousands of doors, and reaching Hispanic voters online in their language of choice.

Stephanie Murphy has been able to reach out to voters with an authentic, positive message that is driven by her accomplishments. In a district where voters with No Party Affiliation make up 30 percent of the electorate, Murphy has been able to break through with her record of standing up to both parties and the White House when they’re wrong and working with them where she can find common ground.

Murphy Built Strong Base of Bipartisan Support and Endorsements

It’s clear that Stephanie Murphy is the most qualified candidate to serve Florida’s 7th Congressional District in the U.S. House. You don’t have to take my word for it; Murphy has earned numerous endorsements, ranging from the Orlando Sentinel, to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, to leading labor unions representing tens of thousands of Florida’s working families.

From the Sentinel:

“In an age of hyperpartisan politics, Stephanie Murphy gives voters hope for something better. The incumbent Democrat showed her congressional colleagues it’s possible to disagree on policy without Americans pounding each other senseless before retreating to their corners… Murphy is made of the stuff that made this country great. And we think that will serve her constituents well in these troubled times. We recommend sending Stephanie Murphy back to the U.S. House.”

Murphy’s Win in 2016 May Have Been an Upset, but it was No Accident

In 2016, many observers weren’t quite sure what to make of the young woman of color who decided to mount a longshot campaign against a longtime incumbent. Two years ago, Stephanie Murphy proved that a first-time, female candidate with a national security background could win in a Republican-held suburban district with hard work and a winning message.

In 2018, there is no mistaking that Stephanie Murphy is in strong position heading into her first re-election based on the strength of her accomplishments and her commitment to run a campaign befitting a competitive swing district in a swing state. To judge this race by her opponents’ campaigns is to miss Stephanie Murphy’s game-changing work ethic – the kind of work ethic that allowed a Vietnamese refugee to go on to occupy the kind of corner offices that her parents used to clean at night to make ends meet. Work ethic that earned Stephanie Murphy the Secretary of Defense Medal for Exceptional Civilian Service. Work ethic that has put her in the driver’s seat heading into Election Night.

Military Family Highlights Murphy’s Commitment to Veterans in New Ad

Daughter of Veteran Shares How Murphy Helped Her Family Cut Through Red Tape, Get Benefits Her Father Earned

WINTER PARK, FLA. — U.S. Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy today launched her third television ad of the 2018 campaign. The 30-second television ad – “Sarah” – highlights Murphy’s commitment to military families with a testimony from Sarah Barton, whose family Murphy helped cut through the red tape at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to get benefits they were owed. Barton’s father, Staff Sergeant Gerald Birman, honorably served in the U.S. Air Force. After his passing, Sarah struggled to get her ailing mother the survivors’ benefits she was owed by the VA. After the family contacted Murphy for assistance, she successfully worked on their behalf to secure benefits that allowed Sarah to care for her mother.

The television ad may be viewed by clicking here. The Murphy campaign noted the ad will run on Orlando cable and broadcast as well as digital.

Statement from Stephanie Murphy:

“When my family fled communist Vietnam, the U.S. Navy rescued us, allowing us to come to America to pursue the American Dream,” said Murphy. “I owe this country – especially our men and women in uniform – a debt of gratitude I can never fully repay, but I am working hard every day to try. Supporting our veterans and their families isn’t just professional for me, it’s personal.”

By Joey Roulette, 10/1/18

Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rosselló visited Orlando and Kissimmee on Monday to endorse U.S. Senator Bill Nelson, U.S. Rep.
