Stephanie Murphy Launches Effort to Listen to Florida Democrats

Florida Congresswoman to Host Virtual Conversation Series with Key Democratic Stakeholders Across Florida; Will Help Democrats ‘Cast Forward’ into 2022

WINTER PARK, FLA. – In a video released today, U.S. Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy of Winter Park, Fla., announced an effort to help regroup, refocus, and reenergize Florida Democrats in advance of the 2022 elections with an initiative she is calling “Cast Forward with Stephanie Murphy.” Murphy, who has a proven track record of winning tough races in a competitive district, wants to help Democrats better prepare for the future.

“Florida is not a red state; it’s a hard state. You need the right money, message, and machine to compete and we’ve clearly fallen short over the last few election cycles,” said Murphy. “Now is not the time to lament about the past or to give up, but to come together ahead of 2022. I look forward to many frank and fruitful conversations over the next few months that I know will ultimately lead to a stronger and more effective party. Too many hardworking families have been left behind by the inhumane and incompetent leadership of the Trump-Rubio-DeSantis party, and these struggling families are depending on us to take back our state, to get through this pandemic together, and to put families first again.”

About the Effort

Murphy plans to organize a series of virtual conversations with Florida Democrats and key stakeholders, hosting listening events and one-on-one discussions throughout the state to gather input and ideas on how to build for the future. To lead this effort, Murphy has hired Lauren Calmet, the former political director of the Florida Democratic Party, who will work with the diverse and passionate factions of the party to facilitate these important conversations.

“I’m thrilled to work on this effort with Congresswoman Murphy, a dynamic leader who knows how to mobilize grassroots campaigns to defeat Republicans and fight for Florida families,” said Lauren Calmet, political director for Stephanie Murphy for Congress. “Our goal will be to listen, to gather data, and to work with Democratic leaders and legislators, donors, and grassroots activists across the state to put us on a path to victory next year.”

The initial phase of the conversation series will focus on five key areas critical to the future of Florida:

  • Addressing the COVID-19 pandemic;
  • Managing misinformation;
  • Combatting climate change;
  • Advancing social justice and fighting voter suppression; and,
  • Developing a new generation of Floridians.

About Stephanie Murphy

A former educator and businesswoman, Stephanie is an immigrant, a refugee, and the first Vietnamese-American woman ever elected to Congress. Her family fled Communist Vietnam when she was a baby and were rescued by the U.S. Navy when their boat ran out of fuel and food in the South China Sea. After spending time in a Malaysian refugee camp, Stephanie and her family immigrated to the U.S. and settled in northern Virginia, becoming proud U.S. citizens. Stephanie went on to become the first woman in her family to go to college. Following the 9/11 attacks, she left her job in the private sector and eventually went to work at the Department of Defense as a national security specialist in the President George W. Bush administration.

After her husband had the opportunity to run a small business in Florida, Stephanie moved to Orlando and returned to the private sector, counseling small businesses and startups and teaching at Rollins College in Winter Park. When a gunman attacked the Pulse nightclub in Orlando in June 2016, Stephanie launched her campaign for Congress two weeks later, running on a platform of change, security, and equality.

Murphy went on that year to stun the political establishment by defeating a 24-year Republican incumbent. In 2018, she defeated a Republican state representative by over 15 points. Her margin of victory in 2018, compared to 2016, marked the largest improvement of any Democratic incumbent in Congress. In 2020, Murphy easily dispatched her main opponent, a Republican doctor from Puerto Rico. Murphy has consistently won despite representing one of nine congressional districts in America that The Cook Political Report rates as having a “zero” partisan tilt, meaning it is evenly split among Democrats, Republicans, and non-party affiliates.

Since coming to Congress, Murphy has consistently been named one of the most bipartisan and most effective Members of Congress, quickly rising up in the ranks to secure coveted seats on the House Ways & Means Committee and the House Armed Services Committee. Most recently, House Democratic Whip Jim Clyburn selected Murphy to serve as one of his chief deputy whips in the 117th Congress. As someone whose family fled a Communist regime, Murphy has been an outspoken critic of those who casually toss around the term socialism, declaring in an April 2019 Washington Post op-ed that “I am a proud Democrat. I’m also a proud Capitalist” and stating “the best way to blunt the appeal of socialism in the United States is to improve capitalism so it works better for everyone.”

NEWS: Murphy Re-Elected to U.S. House for Third Term

Pledges to Continue Working in Bipartisan Manner to Help Unite the Country

WINTER PARK, FLA. – Voters in Florida’s Seventh Congressional District tonight re-elected U.S. Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy to a third term in the U.S. House of Representatives. Murphy, who was first elected in 2016 after defeating then-Congresswoman John Mica, released a video thanking her supporters and pledging to continue working with both parties to help heal and unite the country.

TRANSCRIPT:

“Good evening, Central Florida. I’m Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy, and my heart is so full tonight. I am incredibly grateful that you – the voters of Central Florida – voted to let me serve another term as your Congresswoman – serving as your voice in our nation’s capital. It is an absolute honor and privilege, and I am humbled by the faith and trust you put in me once again.

My opponent called me tonight and conceded. I wish him and his family all the best.

As many of you know, my family and I came from a country that did not have free and fair elections. So I am in awe every time I see my name on a ballot. I realize how lucky I am to be an American; to put forth my own ideas; to debate my opponents; and to hold my government accountable.

This election is about the future, and our campaign’s message of jobs, security, and opportunity clearly resonated. Instead of running on fear or misinformation, we stayed positive. We didn’t rely on dark money to smear our opponents; we talked about our values and offered a plan for the future.

Now I know “message” alone doesn’t win a campaign; it requires an army of supporters to help get that message out. That’s where you delivered. So, whether you gave $50, or made 50 calls, or texted 50 people, or dropped off 50 flyers at homes around Central Florida…from the bottom of my heart, I thank you.

This pandemic forced us to campaign in a new way. And so we got creative, and we got to work. And for that…I will always be grateful. The best campaigns are people-powered, and I am so proud of this campaign and what we achieved together.

Thank you to my amazing congressional and campaign staff who give it their all day in and day out. And an extra special thank you to Chip and Drake for all you did to help us win.

To my husband, Sean; my two kids; my entire family, and my friends — thank you for your love and support. It’s never easy to run for office, and it’s even harder to serve. Thank you for your sacrifice and your neverending faith in me. It’s what keeps me going.

But this election isn’t about me. It’s about our future. It’s about you and your family’s future. And we face a lot of uncertainty in the future. But please let me offer you this certainty: whether you voted for me or not…I will listen to you. I will fight for you. And I will continue work with whoever it takes to put politics aside and get results.

We are going to create more and better-paying jobs and support our small businesses.

We are going to fight for a more secure future, free from the pandemic and free from gun violence.

And we are going to work tirelessly so that every family has a fair shot and an equal opportunity to get ahead.

But we can only do these things if we come together not as Democrats, Republicans, or Independents, but if we come together as Americans.

As we move past this historic election, we need less partisanship and more patriotism. That’s my pledge to you:  to always put people over politics and results over rhetoric.

Thank you Central Florida for your faith in me. I will not let you down.”

NEWS: Murphy to Invest Quarter of a Million Dollars in GOTV efforts in Seminole County

Democratic Congresswoman Calls Seminole County “Epic Battleground for Florida’s Future”

LONGWOOD, FLA. – Stephanie Murphy for Congress is investing at least $250,000 in Democratic get-out-the-vote (GOTV) efforts in Seminole County in the final weeks of the campaign. U.S. Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy said the investment will help turn out a record number of Democrats in Seminole County.

This direct investment from Murphy follows on the heels of major investments by Developing A New Generation PAC, established by Murphy to help elect a new generation of Democratic leaders, which contributed more than $30,000 last month to competitive Florida House and Senate candidates, the Orange County Democratic Party, the Seminole County Democratic Party, and the Florida Democratic Party.

Murphy’s pledged GOTV investment is as follows:

$150,000 – Mail GOTV/Voter Education

$40,000 – Digital GOTV/Voter Education

$60,000 – Field staff and supporting materials

$250,000 – TOTAL

“Seminole County is an epic battleground for Florida’s future, and I’m all in. With this election being so important, I’m investing more than a quarter of a million dollars in voter education and get-out-the-vote efforts in Seminole County, ” said Murphy. “We need leaders in Seminole County and in Tallahassee who will put families first and stand up to the actions by the Trump and DeSantis administrations that are jeopardizing our family’s safety and our economic recovery. Together, we will flip Seminole County blue this November.”

The videos tout Murphy’s consistent outreach to the Hispanic community, her leadership on issues important to Puerto Ricans in Florida, and her work helping to secure federal aid for Puerto Rico and Florida in the aftermath of Hurricanes Irma and Maria.

“I’m incredibly proud to represent Central Florida, which is home to a large, vibrant, and proud Hispanic community,” said Murphy. “What’s important to my constituents is important to me. It’s why I care deeply about jobs, health care, education, and gun safety. It’s also why after Hurricanes Irma and Maria I fought to get Puerto Rico critical aid and why I support statehood for the American citizens in Puerto Rico. I’ll keep fighting to ensure every American – whether in Florida or Puerto Rico – has a fair shot at the American Dream.”

NEWS: Murphy Shatters Fundraising Record, Raises Over $750k in Third Quarter

Murphy Enters Campaign Home Stretch with Nearly $1.7M Cash On Hand

WINTER PARK, FLA. – U.S. Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy today reported raising more than $750,000 in the third quarter of 2020, shattering her own campaign’s record for all previous quarters. Murphy enters the final quarter of 2020 with nearly $1.7 million cash on hand – eight times more than her Republican opponent’s cash on hand.

“We are proud to see the support and momentum for Stephanie Murphy continue to grow in the final weeks of the campaign,” said Chip Harris, deputy campaign manager for Stephanie Murphy for Congress. “While Stephanie’s opponents have pledged their loyalty to President Trump and support his Administration’s efforts to repeal our health care, Stephanie Murphy is fighting to strengthen our health care and is working in a bipartisan way to expand coverage and lower premiums. We need more bipartisan bridge builders in Congress like Stephanie Murphy, not more Trump rubber-stamps like her opponents.”

In the pre-primary report filed in August, Murphy reported raising $152,527. In the remaining weeks of the quarter, Murphy reported raising $602,107, for a total of $754,635 raised in the third quarter of 2020. Murphy enters the fourth quarter with $1,695,407 cash on hand. She reported no personal loans, unlike her Republican opponent.

NEWS: U.S. Chamber of Commerce Endorses Stephanie Murphy for Congress

Organization Praises Murphy’s Bipartisan Voting Record, Work on Economic Growth and Fiscal Responsibility

WINTER PARK, FLA. – The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the world’s largest business organization representing companies of all sizes across every sector of the economy, today endorsed Stephanie Murphy for Congress. Murphy, who is leader of the pragmatic, fiscally responsible Blue Dog Democrats, secured the endorsement due to her bipartisan voting record and work promoting economic growth and fiscal responsibility.

“In challenging times, we are reminded of the importance of having leaders who understand the genius of the American system of government and free enterprise and who are willing to tackle the hard problems that confront our nation,” said Tom Donohue, chief executive officer of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, in the organization’s endorsement letter. “Your continued leadership in Congress will benefit the nation as we combat the coronavirus, work to restore economic growth, and expand opportunities for all Americans.”

As a member of the Ways & Means Trade Subcommittee, Murphy worked closely with the Trump Administration to help pass the historic U.S.-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement to level the playing field, bring more jobs to Florida, and expand markets for Florida’s small businesses. Murphy also, again as a member of the Ways & Means Committee, wrote and helped pass the Employee Retention Tax Credit (ERTC) which is helping countless employers across the country keep their employees on payroll or rehire them. She is pushing for an expanded ERTC and additional small business assistance in the next round of COVID relief that Congress is currently considering.

“In helping our small businesses, I’ve voted to roll back burdensome regulations and red tape, increase access to capital, and provide emergency relief during the pandemic. I have and always will put people over politics, which is why President Trump appointed me to serve on his bipartisan task force to help re-energize our nation’s economy,” said Murphy. “As a former businesswoman who has counseled startups and small businesses, I’m proud to be a pro-worker, pro-small business leader who is laser-focused on creating more and better-paying jobs in Central Florida. I’ll keep working with our local chambers of commerce to help our small businesses get through this crisis, create jobs, and build back better than before.”

According to the U.S. Chamber, it endorses leaders in Congress who it determines to vigorously support policies that advance economic growth, help create jobs, and promote fiscal responsibility. Last year, the U.S. House of Represenatives passed the USMCA, renewed the charter of the Export-Import Bank, reauthorized Terrorism Risk Insurance, and restored critical resources for highway funding. While just a snapshot of important House activity in 2019, the organization said Murphy’s lifetime percentage on the Chamber’s “How They Voted” scorecard was the driving factor in securing the endorsement.

NEWS: Murphy Condemns President Trump’s ‘Ignorant & Disrespectful’ Comments Towards Puerto Ricans

Trump Called Puerto Rico “Dirty” and Proposed to Swap it for Greenland(

Traducción del comunicado en español se encuentra abajo)

WINTER PARK, FLA. – U.S. Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy released the following statement after a former Department of Homeland Security (DHS) official said Wednesday President Trump called Puerto Rico “dirty” and proposed to swap it for Greenland. Murphy has been an early and strong supporter of equality for Puerto Rico through statehood. Murphy, alongside U.S. Rep. Jenniffer González-Colón, Puerto Rico’s Republican representative in Congress, introduced bipartisan legislation to begin the process of admitting Puerto Rico as our nation’s 51st state. Murphy also worked with González-Colón to help Puerto Rico get the help it needed in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria and to reduce drug-related violence on the island. Finally, after thousands of families from Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands moved to Florida after Hurricane Maria, Murphy secured over $100 million to help K-12 schools and colleges in the state afford the costs of educating these new students.

Statement from U.S. Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy:

“Our fellow American citizens in Puerto Rico deserve true equality.  That’s why I support statehood, which would give the Puerto Rican people voting rights, guarantee their equal treatment under all federal laws, and improve quality of life on the island. I condemn the President’s ignorant and disrespectful comments toward Puerto Ricans, who have made countless contributions to our country in times of war and peace. As long as I’m in Congress, I will continue to fight for fair and dignified treatment for the island.”

NEWS: Murphy Statement on Primary Election Results

Murphy Starts General Election with Commanding Fundraising Lead, Solid Bipartisan Record

WINTER PARK, FLA. – U.S. Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy released the following statement after officially securing the Democratic nomination to represent Florida’s Seventh Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. Murphy, who was first elected in 2016, enters the race with a commanding fundraising lead and a solid record of bipartisan results. She is consistently rated as one of the most effective and bipartisan Members of Congress.

Statement from U.S. Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy:

“While folks in Washington and Tallahassee have been focused on pointing blame and scoring political points, I’ve worked with both parties to get results for Central Florida, to keep us safe, and to get our economy going again. I’m running to focus on jobs, security, and opportunity for every Florida family and to work in a bipartisan way to get our nation through this crisis.

“My Republican opponent spent the primary pledging his allegiance to President Trump, attacking women’s rights, and pushing to repeal our health care in the midst of a global pandemic. We need leaders who will put people over politics and pledge their allegiance to the Constitution – not a president.

“I look forward to an honest and vigorous campaign.”

NEWS: Leading National Gun Violence Prevention Organizations Endorse Stephanie Murphy for Congress

Murphy Criticizes Republican Opponents for Opposing Gun Safety Legislation

ORLANDO – Today, two leading national gun safety organizations have endorsed Stephanie Murphy for Congress citing her results as a leading gun safety champion in Congress. In her first term, Murphy successfully led the bipartisan effort to effectively repeal the Dickey Amendment, which for 22 years had prohibited the federal government from funding gun violence research. She also helped lead the effort to finally appropriate funds to study gun violence and identify solutions to help reduce gun violence. This Congress, Murphy, who is a member of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, helped introduce an assault weapons ban and voted to pass historic gun safety legislation in the House, including universal background checks and closing the Charleston loophole.

“I’m continually inspired by Gabby Giffords and honored to have her support along with Brady PAC who has long fought against the corporate gun lobby to pass commonsense gun safety legislation. I’m proud to stand with them in this fight,” said Murphy. “We can protect Americans’ Second Amendment rights and make our communities safer from the epidemic of gun violence. Unfortunately, my opponents, in their race to embrace President Trump’s divisive policies, have refused to support gun safety legislation, such as universal background checks and closing the gun show loophole. Central Floridians deserve better.”

Giffords is an advocacy and research organization focused on promoting gun control and co-founded by Gabby Giffords, a former Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives.

“Stephanie has had the courage and vision to achieve gun safety victories in Congress that many thought impossible,” said former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, co-founder of Giffords. “She is persistent in her bold fight on behalf of her constituents, and all Americans, who demand action. There’s more work to be done, and we need to send Stephanie back to Congress to finish the job. This November, she needs our support to create lasting change that will free our country from gun violence.”

Brady PAC backs candidates running for state and federal office who support universal background checks, re-enacting the assault weapons ban, extreme risk protection orders, and enacting other common-sense gun violence prevention laws that will make our homes, schools, and communities safer.

“After the massacre at Pulse Nightclub, Stephanie Murphy stepped up to run for Congress on the promise to fight for her constituents and not for special interests. In just the few years she has represented Florida’s 7th District, she has delivered: fighting to fund gun violence research, fix the Charleston loophole, protect women from violent abusers, and passing universal background checks,” said Brian Lemek, Executive Director of BradyPAC. “Rep. Murphy is a vocal proponent of social justice and racial equity. She recognizes the need for both public safety and police reform, as well as solutions to protect disproportionately impacted communities of color, which experience the heaviest burden of everyday gun violence. Rep. Murphy is a champion for her constituents and we are proud to support her.”

NEWS: Top National Environmental Groups Endorse Stephanie Murphy for Congress

ORLANDO – The nation’s leading environmental advocacy organizations today endorsed Stephanie Murphy for Congress as she seeks re-election. The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) and Sierra Club announced their endorsement today citing Murphy’s pro-environment voting record and her strong  leadership in Congress on environmental issues. These endorsements follow the release of the 2020 first quarter fundraising numbers this week, which show Murphy has a commanding fundraising lead over her opponents as the Florida qualifying period begins next week.

“I’m incredibly honored to be endorsed by LCV and the Sierra Club and to continue working with them to protect our planet and all who inhabit it. If the COVID-19 pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that we are one planet and one people; the decisions or inaction of any one country can affect us all,” said Murphy.  “Florida is on the frontlines of the climate change battle as it poses an existential threat to our way of life. I’ll keep fighting in Congress for greener policies that ensure we pass on a cleaner, healthier, and more prosperous world to our children”

“Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy has been a strong advocate for the environment, public health and fighting climate change, which is threatening the life and livelihood of millions of Floridians, and we enthusiastically endorse her for re-election,” said LCV Action Fund Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Tiernan Sittenfeld. “Her work to address toxic algal blooms, fight offshore drilling and protect our clean water is vitally important, and Central Florida families know they can depend on Congresswoman Murphy to prioritize them over polluter profits.”

“It is our great pleasure to once again endorse Congressional Representative Murphy in her re-election campaign,” said David Harbeitner, Sierra Club Florida Political Committee Chair. “Since taking office in 2017, she has consistently been a strong voice for the environment in Congress.  Whether addressing pressing issues such as Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) or keeping the EPA focused on protecting both the environment for all of us, Congresswoman Murphy can be counted on to act in our long term interests.  We look forward to supporting her campaign to ensure FL-7 continues to be served by a true servant leader.”

Murphy has now secured endorsements from the nation’s leading women’s rights, environmental, and gun safety advocacy organizations, as well as Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings, Orange County Sheriff John Mina, and Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer.  Here is a complete list of Murphy’s 2020 endorsements so far.
